Gingrich vs. Romney Iowa debate competition in the spotlight

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters)-beginner rivalry between spike Newt Gingrich and former frontrunner Mitt Romney will take the stage on the Saturday of the first two Republican presidential debate in Iowa for five days.

Gingrich, Romney and four other White House contender will make their case to voters in a recent poll showed the race was still up for grabs less than a month before Iowa kicks off the States of the Republic nominates the contest.

The debate will be broadcast nationally on ABC at 9 p.m. EST Drake University in Des Moines. Another Republican debate will be held on Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa.

“This is the last chance for candidates to really have an impact on the race before started voting,” said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak. “This is a great opportunity.”
